Day 6 - Love in the Garden !

OK 5 down for my Valentine ! For, the day of pampering, I think involving the family will be the trick. So, here is where we stand:

1. Some time off (Great idea from yesterday)
2. Dark Chocolate Almonds
3. Her MP3 player full of girls music
4. Home Pampering (A clean bathroom + kids making bath salts + nails done)
5. Flowers (the old standby)

6 - Love in the Garden:
She is an outside girl, always has and I guess will always be. We have a sad garden out back that each year she tries to make something out of, so even for the most clueless of the most clueless guys out there, this one is easy. JUST DO SOMETHING IN THE GARDEN !

So, for this theme I already know that I will spend some time in the garden, (cleaning, raking, etc.) getting ready for the spring, but any ideas of something to put in the garden?

  1. This one I may not be able to help you with. I live in Texas and that's a very different climate and growing season.

BUT . . . I can ask you to think about some things: what does she want out of a garden? Does she want something pretty/interesting to look at? Then research easy to maintain flowers that attract butterflies and/or hummingbirds. Does she want an herb garden so that she always has fresh herbs for cooking (I have a very small herb garden on my back porch in pots and it's wonderful!)? Does she want a vegetable garden?

The answers to all of those questions require research as to what the best plants for your region and for your yard (full sun? partial sun?).

You could either get her a book about gardening and include a gift card to a local nursery. Or you could go an even cheaper route and print out several pages from different website and put them in a binder along with a gift card from a nursery and "coupons" redeemable for help in the garden from family members.

  2. If you know the kinds of things she wants planted in the garden you can also get seeds and peat pots or peat pellets and start growing them indoors so they will have a head start and be ready to plant outside when spring comes.

  3. If the weather isn't right to start planting, you could always look for some decorative stones or plant stakes. Or perhaps just the promise of help in the garden come spring.

  4. OOOOHHHHH!!! You should totally be my hubby! I'd love to have assistance in the gardens...but I'm with the other ladies today -

Find out what she wants out of the garden, AND how much she wants to put in work-wise through the growing season, and run with it...now is totally the time to get seeds and starter soil/pots...

I personally love my herb garden (potted, so I have fresh all year as the pots sit in my south windows all winter), my veggies, but, even more, I love my roses...we have a total of like 42 bushes throughout the yard and gardens in different varieties...one year my beloved bought me 4 minis in different colors for my birthday in November, that we planted in the spring, and they are now about 3 feet tall, and about 4 feet around, doing crazy, he said it was so I could have roses any time I wanted, and know they were from him...

I like the gift card/certificate idea, then she can pick out what she wants...good idea girls!

  5. Kork; My wife would love to be in the garden ALL the time if she could. I know she would love to put hours in every day. For us it is not how much time she want's to put in the garden but how much time can we go in the garden.
